A New Commitment

In 1930, the letter from the Shantymen's Christian Association arrived and forever change the direction of Percy and Margarette's lives. They believed it was God's leading and stepped out to follow it.

Percy's mission assignment was a pioneer one. There was no proper housing or schooling available for his family on the west coast of the island, which was then a very primitive area. Margarette's health was still an issue (she had just given birth to their daughter a few months before this), and Percy did not want her to be left along with two small children while he was away for weeks at a time. So, the fmaily moved in with Grandmother once again...When Percy came home for a short time there were nine people in the house .

This happy arrangement lasted throughout the Depression years. I do not recall ever being hungry or lacking any basic provision during this time. Everyone in our neighborhood was in a similar circumstance, so we never thought of ourselves as "poor."
